This i can totally relate to.I position myself a lot further down stream with pole in hand ready to snatch the big ones that every body overlooked or never saw. Just this past weekend I was at a flea market and picked up a box of oil filled capacitors, old and dirty. The big heavy metal cased ones from the 40's I'm guessing. Found a few 8uF Western Electric caps with the neat WE logo on them and the insulated screw terminals. About passed out when I saw what they sell for on Ebay. I figured they were worth a lot more than I paid for them, but not that much. Makes nice trading fodder for gear down the road.
This is where our road hits a bit of a fork. The good thing about guys like this is that they bring nice used gear into the market place and they don't mind loosing money doing so. Helps guys like me,
This fella couldn't show off his purchasing power fast enough or in a big enough way, had no interest in auditioning anything, just wanted to leap to impress the mental midgets flocking to his pursuit. AC Cowlings could have been his chauffeur. Guys like this help audio enthusiasts(our peers) find a different hobby.
I regret not referring him to "the good sound club" at first contact. But. i swallowed his bait thinking his Altec interest was genuine. It would be interesting to know how he relates to the Altec experience after the speakers are sold and gone. Usually, a capitol loss like that for an individual ends up with innocent parties being tossed under the bus.
